Childhood Diabetes (Type 1 Diabetes)

The cause of diabetes is not understood. However, it is known that the pancreas is unable to produce insulin.

Childhood diabetes also called type 1 diabetes, is classified as an autoimmune disease, which means a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the body’s own tissues or organs. In the case of type 1 diabetes the disease destroys the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Type 1 diabetes is mostly using insulin which is an individual treatment method that depends on the individual case. Usually the treatment consist of a combination of both fast and slow acting insulin.

The symptoms of type 1 diabetes are:

Thirst

Weight loss

Tiredness

Frequent urination

Symptoms more typical for children include:

Tummy pains

Headaches

Behavioral Problem

Just like Type 2 diabetes, it is of vital importance to follow a healthy diet and a regular exercise plan.

Since most of the type 1 diabetes sufferers get diagnosed during childhood. Therefore the responsibly of following a rather stringent diet and exercise plan, as well as regular insulin intake, is more often than not part of parenting. As soon as the child is old enough it should be instructed on how to inject the insulin and follow the daily routine consistently.

How Parents can Help best

Parents of those suffering from childhood diabetes play an essential role in their care. All parents of children who’ve been diagnosed with childhood diabetes should get as much information as available about the condition. Certainly in the early days of the diagnoses parents are well advised to make sure  the daily routine of insulin intake, blood sugar control and diet are strictly followed.

I’ve had rising blood sugar for a number of years - tried to control it with diet and exercise, lots of natural stuff - such a cinnamon, and other natropathic products.

But I have a genetic disposition to the condition - I’m not overweight, it’s just a family history.

So finally had another test, found the levels were around 16.4 m/mol fasting - and started the tablets last night.

Oh well, all good… Continue reading

I’d like to clarify a few things about the condition of diabetes as a health condition upfront.

Diabetes as a health condition is considered as a chronic disease. The body lacks the ability to generate insulin and break down glucose in the blood. To put it differently again a person diagnosed with diabetes doesn’t have enough insulin in their body –this is why their diagnosed as being diabetic. In a… Continue reading

Thinking about it and doing research is very important too however, if there is the slightest inkling that you could be in danger of being diagnosed with diabetes at some stage in your life, follow… Continue reading
